About Gallow Knott
An abrupt rocky top standing proud of the ridge, lower than the fell but sharper, and visible from every road into the district. A knott is a rocky knoll; the rest of the name is older and plainer.
It was where the old justice was done, high up and in sight of everyone, so that the lesson travelled. Nothing marks the place now but the crag itself.
