About Lych Hause
The pass between two dark tops where the old corpse road leaves the valley. Cinderside never had consecrated ground of its own, so for centuries its dead were carried up this track and over the hause to the church on the far side.
A hause is the neck of a pass; lych is the old word for a corpse, as in a lychgate. Beside the track near the top lies a flat slab where the bearers set their load down to rest.
